Core Leadership Courses

Welcome to Girl Scouts (2 hours) This course is offered classroom only. |
Take this course before meeting with girls. Please check the Training Calendar for schedule session. If there are no sessions available close to you, contact your Membership Specialist or Service Unit Manager to schedule a one-on-one. |
It is required for the leader and suggested that the co-leader and assistants take all three Core Leadership courses: Welcome to Girl Scouts, Leadership Essentials, and Troop Essentials. |

Volunteer Orientation (1 hour) This course is offered on-line and home study. |
Volunteer Orientation can be taken as on line course – you will need high speed internet. A home study option is also available. |
Required for volunteers serving in non troop leadership position take within (4) months of appointment. |

Leadership Essentials (2 hours) This course is offered classroom, home study or on-line. |
This course details the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, providing a girl-led troop environment, working with the journey books and troop structure and management. Must be taken within (4) months of being appointed leader but it is suggested to take as soon as possible. |
It is required for the leader and suggested for co-leaders and assistants to complete this course within (4) months of being appointed to the position. |

Troop Essentials (3 hours) This course is offered classroom, home study, webinar or on-line for |
This course details the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, providing a girl-led troop environment, working with the journey books and troop structure and management. Must be taken within (4) months of being appointed leader but it is suggested to take as soon as possible. |

Traveling and Outdoor Series

Planning Trips with Girl Scouts (2 hours) This course is offered on-line and home study. |
Take this course before taking your troop away from their meeting location. This training is for day trips and trips of less than 2 nights. If you are a new troop leader (2009) – this training is now included in your Troop Essentials course. You will NOT need to take it as a separate session. |
This course is required before taking your troop on any type of trip. Suggested that leader, co-leader and/or assistant(s) take this course. |

Troop Camp Certification This course is only offered in-person. |
Take this course before troops can use council camps, cook OR sleep outdoors (or in shelters without electricity OR indoor plumbing). This course may be offered as an entire week-end (Friday Night – Sunday) or may be one evening session in town and a Saturday/Sunday. |
Required of at least one adult who will attend the outing and who is involved in the planning process for the trip. |
Health and Safety Series

CPR & First Aid Level 1 (6 hours) This course is only offered in-person. |
Take this course before specified activities as outlined in Safety-Wise. |
Required of at least one adult in attendance for certain activities per Safety-Wise. |

First Aid Level 2 (4 hours+) This course is only offered in-person.

Take this course before specified activities as outlined in Safety-Wise. Required for resident camp staff and camping events with more then 200 participants and when activity checkpoints indicated in Safety-Wise. |
Required of at least one adult in attendance for certain activities per Safety-Wise. |
