One of the aspects of Girl Scouting that makes it unique is that it is a girl-led program. This means that both adults AND girls work in partnership to plan and execute activities. Always take notice that the Girl Scouts’ physical capabilities and emotional development will affect troop dynamics and the level of their planning skills.

Keep the following in mind when planning activities for GIRL SCOUT BROWNIES:

  • At Brownie level, leaders serve more as managers.
  • Leadership and discipline are starting to become group values.
  • Adults foster open, two-way conversation.
  • Adult maintain order and discipline. But girls are encouraged to discipline themselves.

Brownie–leader acts more like a Manager

Junior – leader acts more like a Teacher

Cadette – leader serves as an Advisor

Senior-leader serves as an Advisor

Ambassador-leader serves as an Advisor

The most important thing with girl planning is to keep moving them more and more towards the day when they will be able to make decisions without any adult assistance. That is probably not going to happen at the Brownie level, but Brownies can and SHOULD move in that direction.

Try this activity to help you focus more on girl/adult planning. Read the scenario and then determine which activities can be girl-led:

Scenario: Your troop suggested several activities, but narrowed the choice down to taking a trip to a local farm to pick pumpkins and have a picnic. Put a “G” by activities that Brownie girls could do and “L” by activities that only leaders should do.
